Volcanoes National Park
Situated in the far northwest of Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park protects the dramatic slopes of the Virunga Mountains—home to the endangered mountain gorilla and an extraordinary mosaic of montane ecosystems. These landscapes include lush evergreen and bamboo forests, open grasslands, swamps, and misty heathlands.
The park takes its name from the chain of dormant volcanoes that form the Virunga Massif:
Karisimbi – the highest peak at 4,507 meters
Bisoke – famous for its emerald crater lake
Sabinyo, Gahinga, and Muhabura – ancient giants shaping the horizon
Tracking endangered mountain gorillas through the mysterious, mist-covered rainforest—alive with the songs of more than 200 colorful bird species and the playful chatter of the rare golden monkey—is one of the most profound wildlife experiences on earth.
Within the park’s boundaries lie additional treasures, including Buhanga Eco-Park, an ancient sacred forest rich with Rwanda’s most fascinating folklore, and the Musanze Caves, formed over 62 million years ago during the region’s last major volcanic eruption.
Volcanoes National Park is a place where nature, culture, and adventure come together, offering an unforgettable journey into the heart of Rwanda’s wild beauty.
